Snowpocalypse - Winter Storm Pax

Yes we are amazed by Snow, Ice and Sleet - Come on we are Southerners!

Partly Cloudy

High: 34 F                           Low: 29 F

Light freezing rain and snow
Bread and milk started coming off the shelves at the beginning of the week. Is is hurricane season already? Nope it is southerners going crazy for Snowpocalypse 2.0!
It is the second siting of snow and ice in South Carolina in 2 weeks! The world must be coming to an end.
If you have family or friends in the south you are seeing Facebook pictures of snow, freezing rain, and ice. You may think to yourself what is the big deal we deal with this all the time in the winter and for longer (if you are from the north)? Us southerners are in The South because we don't do cold weather. My husband is from Pennsylvania and once he join the Marines and went to Parris Island (East Coast boot camp for Marine Corps) he never went back to live. He says is was because he preferred the warmer weather and shoveling was for the birds.

We rarely get this weather so let us have our amazement time of enjoying it. It happens in the middle of South Carolina every 3 or so years and on the coast every 10 or so years.

Yes our state does shut down but that is a safety factor. Our state budgets don't have funds set aside for the sand, salt, and equipment that is required to handle the winter maintenance because  it is not a constant from year to year. I tell everyone our sand is on our beaches not on the roads. All government offices, school, and businesses do close to keep people safe and off the roads. Bridges and certain roads do get closed to keep traffic off them. Citizens of South Carolina do not have rock salt, shovels, tire chains to keep day to day operations going. 100,000 and more of homes without power today that utility crews have been prepping since the beginning of the week to handle. Thank you to crews who are coming in from out of state to assist!
We are on lock down in our homes, but what child or adult doesn't need a snow day every once in awhile? Makes you actually feel like a kid!

We will be back up and operating once all this is melted and off our roads. I give credit to all professionals who have to brave the weather to ensure emergency services are up and operating. Some of the people have to sleep overnight at their place of work as it is not safe to travel. Please think of the law enforcement, firefighters, dispatchers, nurses, doctors, utility crews, and DOT workers who are out braving the cold and the roadways for us!

For the northerners just let us have our pictures and our enjoyment from not having to go to school or work. We will be back to normal bragging about the high temperatures next week. That's a true statement because next week we will be back to 77 degrees for the high.

If you do not have to be on the roads today or tomorrow, please stay off them and quit making additional work for the emergency crews. Stay warm and safe!

Let the Trash Talking Begin! It's College Football Season in the South

Partly Cloudy
High: 92 F                           Low: 71 F
Chance of Rain: 20%             Humidity: 68-91%

If you are living in South Carolina then you know what today is! You can hear it on radios, national television, local television, internet, newspapers and all over your Facebook page!

No it's not just the Thursday before the Labor Day holiday. It's college football season in the south and you can feel the excitement. Today's opening game (SOUTH CAROLINA vs NORTH CAROLINA) that has everyone glued to the tv tonight or playing Sandstorm in their car or at work. If you don't know what I am referring to CLICK HERE

The South is not only passionate about their family and traditions, but don't mess with their college football. It's a form of religion in South Carolina. Whether you are an SEC or ACC fan it is football, and that's what binds us together. It's not just the guys because a woman in the South will also trash talk and argue when it comes to her college football team also. It is all in great fun, and if you take it so serious you start bar fights or disown family that's way too far!

I remember growing up in the Lowcountry in Charleston and coming home from middle school on the big yellow bus. I now look back and feel bad for our bus driver. The "State Title" game Friday on the way home the two side yelled at the top of their lungs all the way home back and forth, "CLEMSON, CAROLINA, CLEMSON, CAROLINA" windows down for the world to hear. It wasn't a short ride either as we lived on the edge of the county line, so about 30 minutes of torture for the driver.

I have since moved to the heart of Gamecock country (Columbia) and while I am a die hard CLEMSON TIGER fan, I feel the excitement to in today's game. The trash talking has started and will last til the New Year, and we have all been waiting for this season to start. While baseball is America's game and basketball season came and went, college football is the sport of the South!

You will see everyone wearing their game gear, little girl's in their cute little cheerleader outfits, facepaint, and of course your Facebook account will be flooding with nothing but college football trash talking. If you aren't a football fan deactivate your Facebook account because it will be a long season.

Enjoy all the college football festivities (safely), have fun showing your pride this season, we wish all the best for the players, and remember CLEMSON RULES!!!!!!!!!!

Help Save Our SC Drive In "The Big Moe"

Isolated T-storms
High: 88 F                              Low: 71 F
Chance of Rain: 30%             Humidity: 96%

Back in June the South Carolina State of Mind blog featured the Drive-In Movie culture in South Carolina. It highlighted the Big Mo Drive In as well as the other 2 remaining drive-in theaters in South Carolina Highway 21 Drive-In (Beaufort) and 25 Drive-In (Greenwood).

To view the previous blog Click Here

The Big Mo needs our help! Film studios are doing away with 35mm films and will be fully digital. This hampers the 386 remaining drive in theaters in the U.S. As this will provide better quality movies and save money to produce the 35mm films many of the drive ins are incapable of meeting DCI compliance requirements. Theaters are required to make screens smaller for some movies, set number of FL (brightness of the picture) and digital 5.1 surround sound. Current drive-ins use FM transmitters to broadcast sound channels to the audience.

Per the WISTV news report The Big Mo is facing a deadline. In less than 3 months majority of the U.S. drive-ins will face closure. The owner Richard Boaz states the drive-in needs about $200,000 to make the switch to digital. The new projectors cost about $80,000 each and the additional funds are needed to renovate the projection booths. WISTV report

Drive-ins that do not make the switch are able to show older films but movie goers want new releases. New releases attract the customers therefore keeping the drive-ins in business.

The Highway 21 Drive In located in Beaufort did a tremendous amount of fundraising in 2013 to come up with the funds to comply with the digital switch. They utilized their facility to not only show movies but host events among numerous fundraising events.

Honda wants to preserve the iconic part of American car culture. They will start a drive-in fund and donating 5 digital projectors. YOUR VOTE DECIDES WHICH DRIVE-INS WILL RECEIVE THE PROJECTORS!!!!

There are 17 days to vote, contribute or pledge to "Project Drive-In." You can vote once at projectdrivein.com and once via text message each day, so remember to come back tomorrow. In the meantime, spread the word about Project Drive-In. CLICK HERE TO VOTE!!!!!!!!

2013 Carolina Panthers Training Camp

Mostly Cloudy
High: 88 F                              Low: 72 F
Chance of Rain: 40%             Humidity: 87%

The Carolina Panthers arrived in Spartanburg SC on Thursday to begin their annual ritual of Training Camp at Wofford College.

The college has hosted the Carolina Panthers Training Camp since their inaugural year of 1995. As a South Carolinian and Carolina Panthers fan I can say this is a great partnership between the two. This partnership I believe is the reason the the Carolina Panther's Training Camp is listed in the top of the "fan friendly" camps.

You are up close to the players and it is amazing how respectful the spectators are of the players and their training. At no NFL game will you ever see this side of fans or the players!

This was my first year attending the training camp and was very excited. I was pleased to have my husband, sister (who is a huge fan), best friend, and my two nephews go with me.

We decided to go up on Saturday for the 2:30pm practice. Yes we are in the south and that is the heat of the day! Crazy! The days events listed on the website were suppose to have a visit by Sir Purr the mascot and the Top Cat cheerleaders. Panthers Pals was also suppose to pic kids to go on the field with the players for the last 30 minutes of practice.

The hour and half ride from Columbia, SC was a little scary with lots of rain and winds. When we pulled into the campus the rains stopped. It was meant to be!

There wasn't a huge crowd which made it easy to get around and see things. Unfortunately none of the other events took place that day such as we never seen Sir Purr or the Top Cats. Panther Pals also did not take kids on the field afterwards..

We prepared by bringing snacks and drinks with us, but they did have concessions, snow cones, and Panthers apparel for sale. They moved the training for the day from the practice field to the stadium so we didn't need to drag our camping chairs out.

I want to give a big thanks to the players who did stay after the 2 hour practice as hot as it was, (I know they were tired) and signed autographs for the fans on our half of the stadium:

#9 Graham Gano, #16 Colby Cameron backup Quarterback, #24 Josh Norman cornerback,
#‎44J‬.J Jansen long snapper,#76 Greg Hardy defensive end, #77 Byron Bell tackle, #41 Captin Munnerlyn cornerback, #59 Luke Kuchley linebacker

I will point out my sister did sneak on the field and get her picture taken with Gano! He was great about it!

My best friend has also become an official Panthers fan after seeing #59 Luke Kuchley!

All in all it was a great day and enjoyed the time with my family! I hope the Panthers have a great season and I admire how the Carolina Panthers are great role models for kids, no drama players (well except for the guy we won't mention many years ago).

If you are a football fan of any team or have kids who enjoy football it is an awesome FREE summer event to go to. It goes last for about a week. For more details go to: Carolina Panthers website

Tips: camping chair for when they use the practice field (ones with umbrella if you have them), sunblock, lots of water and gatorade, snacks, umbrella to keep sun off, hat to block the sun, cushion if practice is in stadium, just in case bug spray (we didn't need it when we went, but it is the south you never know), of course a sharpie for signature!

Now you just have to ask yourself  "Are You Ready For Some Football?"

South Carolina Drive In Movies

Scattered T-storms
High: 92 F                              Low: 74 F
Chance of Rain: 50%             Humidity: 58-83%

Up until a few months ago I haven't been to a drive in movie since I was a little kid. We have been going with our friends to the Big Mo Drive In lately. I have always known they were a dying form of entertainment but never really gave it any thought. I want to commend the people who have revitalized this American past time! As a little girl I do remember being at the North 52 Drive In in North Charleston sitting on top of the car with my blanket and popcorn. These are the memories that have recently came back to me with hanging out with our friends at the drive in.

Movies have turned into being squeezed into multiple little rooms with cellphone lights and people talking all for revenue. If you have checked the prices of tickets lately with snacks it can be costly for a family! If this isn't for you then maybe a drive in will be.

For our recent trip to the Big Mo Drive In this past Friday we all arrived around 6pm. You may think that is early as my husband did since the first showing doesn't start till after dusk. We usually meet for dinner somewhere first but to get a decent parking spot it was decided to arrive early and bring a dinner of subs, chips, sodas, snacks, and cookies! We sat around ate dinner, chatted about our lives and upcoming vacation,  and people watched.

There are all ages and groups of people: families, couples, teenagers, and friends. Never have we noticed any issues and sometimes if you listen you can't hear anything but the movie! We watch people who have brought light weight sofas for the back of their truck, air mattresses to lay on, and many other comfortable neat ideas. We just sit in fold up chairs and kick our feet up on coolers.

The Big Mo Drive In is located at 5822 Columbia Highway Monetta, SC 29105 which is about halfway between N. Augusta and Columbia. This drive in was opened April 30, 1951 and closed in 1986. It was reopened in March 1999 and has been opened since. It is opened Friday and Saturday nights, has three screens, concession stand and bathrooms. The movies are just as new as the theaters and it cost $8.00 per person for a double feature. This past weekend we seen World War Z and Man of Steel.

In South Carolina there are only 3 operating drive in theaters: The Big Mo (Monetta, SC), Highway 21 Drive In (Beaufort, SC), and 25 Drive In (Greenwood, SC).

By supporting the local drive ins you are support local family businesses. Most of the revitalization efforts have been made by owners who run it as a family business.

DRIVE IN FACTS
Do you know when the first drive in opened?  June 6, 1933 in Camden, New Jersey by Richard Hollingshed. It cost $0.25 for the car and $0.25 for each person.

The largest drive in recorded was the All-Weather Drive In in Copiague, NY. It capacity was 2,500 parking spaces and 1,200 seated viewing. There are two smallest drive ins on record whose capacity was 50 parking spaces each. One was Harmony Drive In in Harmony, PA and Highway Drive In in Bamberg, SC.

See you at the movies!

Do you know what movies have been filmed in South Carolina?

The gorgeous scenery that South Carolina has to offer gives a natural landscape to movies. South Carolina has been embracing the movie industry for the past few years to contribute to our state and communities. There are numerous topographical areas in South Carolina that can benefit film makers: swamp, beach, plantation architecture, mountains, rivers, woods, waterfalls, lakes, historic grounds, and many more!
